Autodesk's platform team moved from tactical to strategic PM

With nearly 15 years of product experience and a complex technical platform spanning every industry cloud in the company, Autodesk's Senior Technical PM needed a tool that could keep pace with the speed of enterprise product development — and free up time for the strategic work that actually drives competitive advantage.

The Challenge

18 months of backlog, 9 months to deliver

Autodesk's platform visualization team sits at the heart of the company's product ecosystem. Responsible for the APIs and SDKs that power every viewer, plus Model Derivative — one of Autodesk's largest and most-used API endpoints — the team has to collaborate across every industry cloud in the organization, from AEC to manufacturing to media.

Creating priorities across that many business units was painful and time-consuming. The PM team was juggling complex modernization efforts on capabilities built decades ago. With 18 months of backlog to fit into 9 months, every hour spent on tactical document creation was an hour not spent on strategic thinking.

The conventional PM workflow — sit down, open a blank document, wrestle with structure and wording for hours — wasn't sustainable. And the challenge compounded: information got diluted as it moved between teams, so the final document often represented only a subset of the actual vision. By the time a PM finished wordsmithing, the strategic window had already shifted.

The team had tried other AI tools — Claude, Copilot, ChatGPT — but each had a frustrating tendency to go off on tangents or stubbornly resist corrections. As the PM described it: getting to 80% was useful, but the last 20% felt like “arguing with a five-year-old.”

The Solution

Bootstrap faster, iterate with focus

ChatPRD transformed the document creation workflow from hours of tedious drafting to fast, focused iteration. The PM loaded custom templates and context documents — PDFs, PowerPoints, prior specs — and ChatPRD produced a structured first draft that stuck to the format rather than inventing its own structure or going off on irrelevant tangents.

This was the critical difference from other AI tools: ChatPRD respected the template. When given a specific format, it stayed on track. The PM could iterate rapidly without having to constantly pull the conversation back, which meant fewer wasted cycles and faster time-to-value on every document.

The reviewing process became more engaging. Instead of building from scratch and getting lost in syntax and wordsmithing — especially challenging for a French-Canadian PM working in English — the team was refining a strong foundation. ChatPRD provided the words they were looking for, and they focused on whether the ideas were right.

More importantly, the time savings unlocked a fundamental shift in how the PM role operated. Instead of being stuck in tactical document creation, PMs could focus on market analysis, competitive positioning, and strategic planning. Nobody has time to sit in ideation mode for three months. ChatPRD gave them the speed to keep up without sacrificing quality.

The result was not just faster documents — it was faster trust. PMs could hit the ground running in new product areas, demonstrate strategic value earlier, and be seen as thought leaders within their function instead of document factories.

Key Highlights

What stood out

Template fidelity matters

Unlike competitors that went off on tangents, ChatPRD stuck to custom templates — producing output in the exact structure the team needed without constant correction.

Product story before architecture

ChatPRD helped ensure the product narrative came first — before engineering jumped to RFCs and architecture diagrams — keeping teams aligned on the 'why' before the 'how.'

From tactical to strategic

By removing the tedious drafting burden, PMs shifted their time toward market analysis, competitive positioning, and the strategic work that drives real competitive advantage.

Faster trust in new roles

PMs could hit the ground running, demonstrating strategic value faster. ChatPRD empowered product managers to be seen as thought leaders within their function — not just document creators.

Cross-BU standardization

With platform products spanning every industry cloud, consistent document quality across business units became achievable through reusable templates and structured outputs.

Multilingual advantage

For non-native English speakers, ChatPRD eliminated the wordsmithing tax — providing the right words while the PM focused on whether the ideas were right.

In Their Words

What the team says

Getting the draft up is 80% of the job. ChatPRD really helps bootstrap quicker for any kickoffs so that engineering has the product story — and we don't go the classical route of architecture diagrams coming in first and then, crap, we gotta build the PRD.

It removed the tedious part of it. No one really has the time to sit down in ideation mode for three months. Having the capability of moving away from the tactical aspect faster empowers product managers to be seen as thought leaders within their function.
